SpeakerSavvy: Wisdom from the Dark Side
(A Bureau Owner Comes Clean)

with Bronwyn Hesketh

Bronwyn HeskethSpeakers Bureaus have two sets of customers they work with — those who are looking for speakers, and speakers who are looking for gigs. The companies and associations who come to them are depending on them to be aware of the speakers out there, and who will best serve their needs.

If you’re a speaker, you would be wise to learn what speakers bureaus know about what works to get you hired, and what you can do to enhance — or damage — your reputation in the industry.

Our next program features the long-time owner of a very successful international speakers bureau. She will look at trends she sees in the speaking industry, and offer tips that will help you stand out.

Miscellaneous Tips

Be wary of business radioChuck Reaves

You receive an email from New York or Florida gushing about your expertise. When can you be interviewed for “_______ Business Radio”? They will provide you with an audio/video of your interview for your marketing. You set the date, answer some questions for the “celebrity” interviewer to ask and say that you will be willing to answer questions from the listeners.

Following your brief interview (sometimes very brief), you receive a call that you scored high on their scale, 9+ out of 10, and listeners want to hear more, there wasn’t time for Q&A because you were so interesting. It gets better. If you do not already have a corporate sponsor that will pay for the air time, they will find one for you AND pick up the production fees for only $XXXX. Or, you can simply schedule a littler one for only $XXX. Ask yourself, how often do you and your clients listen to business radio?

Split-test toolDeborah Torres Patel

This (pickfu.com) is an excellent independent resource that provides unbiased, real-time feedback using polls to test book covers, titles, product names, etc. It’s an extraordinary tool for authors, entrepreneurs, e-commerce sellers and app developers that provides ultra-valuable feedback in minutes. I did eight different polls with them in the past quarter. For my next book and cover, I’ll actually split test using polls before I even write the first word.

The BBC now has 16,000 sound effects you can useTom Terrific

Depending how you use them, they are either free to use or have a $5 fee. bbcsfx.acropolis.org.uk

Webmaster recommendationMilo Shapiro

I’m happy to recommend Kim Blake (Alpha-Webworks.com) for web development. She patiently helped me wade through the 900+ pages I’d created on my old site since 2000 to figure out all I really needed for the new 40-page site. Loving my new WordPress site and feeling fully 21st-Century with it. Fair pricing, too.

Book clubs increase sales and extend your book’s life cyclePatrick Donadio

Clients ask if they can use my book for their book club. One client not only bought the books for her team, she had me do a wrap-up workshop to help her team tie it all together.

I suggest you create a “Book Club Leader’s Guide.” My instructional designer-friend, Bonnie Mattick developed my book club leader guide. She created a template for the guide with a format that can be applied to most business topics. This includes a short summary of each chapter, 4–5 review questions and some exercises that can be conducted in a group or in a virtual setting. Also, she included a practical application with a suggested activity that’s unique to the business your book addresses, closing with summary end-notes about the key words and concepts.

Travel Tips

Before calling to get a seat assignmentRebecca Morgan

If you have to call the airlines to get your seat assignment (as some international travel requires), go to SeatGuru.com before making the call and bring up the specific flight’s aircraft map. Then when the rep offers you a seat, you can see if there are any restrictions or negative comments before accepting. This has saved me getting stuck in a seat with no window, or next to the bathroom when others are available.

Topic of the Month (TOTM) — Your Input Wanted

Our TOTM is: What one (or two) new activities will you start now to help you grow your business in 2019?

Send your brief, pithy responses to editor@SpeakerNetNews.com. Please put “Topic of the Month” or “TOTM” in the subject line.

Jack Canfield said, “Do 5 things a day to promote your book, speaking, etc.” For me:

  • One video a week and one article a week evangelizing my topic posted to LinkedIn groups and other social media.
  • Use Google Alerts to find and comment on articles about my topic.
  • Connect with advocates and evangelists about my topic.

In 2019, we are going to nail LinkedIn. We’ve had an active presence there for years, and it’s our most profitable social channel. This year, we’re going to dig deeper, learn new best practices and work to multiply its value.

Cher Holton

We have kicked off this year by creating very detailed “Client Personas” to drive our marketing, sales, and product development for the year. It has already been a really great process to help us clarify exactly where we want to focus this year.

The other new activity we are starting this year is to stop marketing things we don’t really want to do! (Thanks to Alan Weiss for the idea during his NSA VIP Suite.)

SpeakerSavvy: Wisdom from the Dark Side
(A Bureau Owner Comes Clean)

with Bronwyn Hesketh

Bronwyn HeskethYou’ve got a great talk — funny, insightful, with useful information. Yet your phone isn’t ringing off the hook. You’d love someone who hears candid client feedback tell you what makes good talks get booked more.

That someone is a bureau owner willing to share what clients tell her after the speaker has left. She’s heard the good and bad. She knows what will get that speaker booked again with a steady stream of referrals. And what the speaker did before, during, and after the talk that will ensure the client never hires him/her again.

Do you want to know what she knows? Of course you do! Bronwyn will tell you what speakers (collectively, not by name, of course) do that makes them the perfect speaker, and what to avoid to not be the one who never gets booked again.

Also, she finds many speakers are confused about what bureaus will and won’t do for you, so she’ll clarify that. Plus, she’ll tell the truth about showcases and how to make these pay off for you.

In this program you will learn:

  • what makes a salable talk
  • how to be the perfect speaker to work with
  • what a bureau will and won’t do for you
  • the truth about showcases
  • the best way to approach bureaus
  • trends in the speaking industry

Note: there will not be a live session available for this program. Please order the recording.
