Be a Star of the Small Screen:
How to Film Yourself on Your Phone
so You Don’t Look or Sound Like an Idiot

with Penny Haslam

Penny HaslamWhen you began your speaking career, you probably envisioned yourself standing on a stage, or in front of a room, speaking to a sea of engaged faces. You probably didn’t envision yourself in a small room, by yourself, speaking to a camera attached to a computer.

Yet that’s been what a lot of speaking has been like for a couple of years now, and it’s likely to continue.

How do you assure that you come across as effectively as possible in this small-screen environment? Come learn what a former BBC presenter and award-winning speaker can teach us.

Read more about this session at the bottom of this newsletter, then register for the live program or pre-order the recording.

Note: Everyone who registers for the live teleseminar session will get the audio MP3 recording of the session.

Intensive — Uncommon Model for Speaking as Much
as You Want — and Being Paid Handsomely for It

Generate High Income by Hosting Retreats and Bootcamps

Bootcamps/retreats seem to be the perfect model. But how do you fill them so you’re not committed to a multi-day program with only 2 people? What are the best ways to market them? And how do you price your offering? Should there be ongoing sessions afterwards? What are the best days of the week? Location? Logistics?

Our experts will share their best practices for creating high-revenue multi-day off-site programs.

  • “Provide High-Profit Retreats, Bootcamps, or Intensives with Less Effort Than You Think” (webcast) with Norm Hull, CSP
  • “Retreats to Riches: How to Use Small Events to Drive Back-End Income and Impact from Your Speaking (Both Live and Virtual)” (webcast) with Michelle Villalobos, CSP

Miscellaneous Tips

Record your next interview by phoneBrian Schwartz

Not everyone is able to navigate the recording software used by the majority of podcasters today (yes, even Zoom). Why not make it easy on your subject and just call them by phone the old-school way? This free iPhone app worked like a charm to capture an mp3 recording for an interview I did by phone recently.

Going one step further, you can use Descript to automagically transcribe your interview into text you can edit and publish with the audio file.

USPS Informed DeliveryCarole Copeland Thomas

Sign up for USPS Informed Delivery — a no-cost service offered by the US Post Office. Every day they email you a scan of your mail before it’s delivered. Some clients still mail checks, and this service is vital, especially when you travel and/or your payments are delayed.

Trademarking a nameRebecca Morgan

This interesting article by Bill Honaker has implications for speakers.

SNN readers have huge hearts and want to pay it forward. This holiday season, give a gift that counts. Please donate to help support, feed, equip, and provide basic school supplies for the neediest Dalit women and children in India. All donations are tax-deductible in US/Canada. Thank you.
Virtual presentations are here to stay. Take your “pretty good” presentations to “stellar” by enrolling in the eSpeakers Certified Virtual Host course led by Rebecca Morgan. Starts in Jan. Limited space. Details

Travel Tips

If renting cars in the Chicago areaBob Wendover

If you drive on part of the IL Tollways system and don’t have an I-Pass, it is impossible to pay tolls using cash. You have to go online afterward, establish an account with a credit card, and pay the tolls within 14 days. BUT after you do, go back into the system and remove the rental car and its license plate from your record. Otherwise, IL Tollways will assign the next renter’s tolls to your account. I discovered this after being automatically charged $18 for tolls two and three weeks after returning the car. To obtain a refund, you have to complete a three-page affidavit and mail it in with documentation.

Topic of the Month (TOTM) — Your Input Wanted

This is the last week we’ll post responses to this TOTM: When you’re going on a multi-day trip and there’s no gym at your hotel or close by, what exercise equipment do you take (not just clothes, like runners, yoga pants, or gym shorts)?

Our next TOTM is our annual question: “What do you plan to implement to grow your business in 2023?”

Send your brief, pithy responses *that are different from those previously mentioned* to editor@SpeakerNetNews.com. Please put “Topic of the Month” or “TOTM” in the subject line.

A jump rope for cardio and a list/diagram of yoga poses is helpful when traveling. Stretching and getting off my butt is the name of the game.

Tom Terrific

I download YouTube exercise videos onto my laptop. Even if you don’t have internet available you can exercise while watching the laptop video. Note — you may need YouTube Premium for this feature.

Be a Star of the Small Screen:
How to Film Yourself on Your Phone
so You Don’t Look or Sound Like an Idiot

with Penny Haslam

Penny HaslamDo you worry you’re missing out on opportunities by being a best-kept secret? Would you prefer not to think about video, to promote what you do, and how you help? Does it frustrate you when you see another speaker shining on social media in a video?

You know it should be simple to record yourself on your smart phone (or computer), but it takes a ton of time and you rarely like what you see. So you don’t post it — on all those free to use platforms which can be so valuable to your business! Which means you don’t draw people to you ... which means you’re not attracting a following who would love to buy from you. Ugh!

How do you fix this? Penny, former BBC national television presenter, will distill her vast experience in front of the camera so you can become a star of the small screen. Join us for this exciting and illuminating session!

In this fun and useful session, you’ll learn how to look and sound your best on your phone camera (or any video!) so people pay attention, engage with content they can easily follow, understand your offerings, and buy from you!

As an award-winning motivational speaker and former BBC presenter, Penny will share her pro-tips and techniques so you can use video comfortably to stand out in our busy marketplace.

You will learn how to:

  • stop feeling like an idiot on camera!
  • quiet your inner technophobe that screams when you begin to think about what’s involved
  • perform better and have more confidence on camera
  • be quicker at recording and sharing video than you are writing a blog!
  • get the inspiration for long-term content planning
  • engage your audience every time you press Record — and win more bookings!
Register for the live program or order the recording.
Note: Everyone who registers for the live teleseminar session will get the audio MP3 recording of the session.
