Miscellaneous Tips

Your follow-up after a podcast is your goldMelanie Benson

If you just “record and leave” a guest expert interview, you are leaving massive opportunity and financial gain on the table. Sixty-five percent of your hosts could open the door to more speaking opportunities and client leads. Take the lead, open up the conversation and find a way to give first, if needed.

Social Media Survival Guide: Two types of content you need to masterVickie Sullivan

The changes we’ve seen on social media platforms aren’t going away anytime soon. According to recent reports, referral traffic from Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) continues to decline.

At the same time, short-form video is having a moment. Those videos now receive over 200 billion views a day across Facebook and Instagram.

These disruptions require immediate attention. You can no longer expect to post links to your website or blog on social platforms (not even as a comment on a post) and expect to receive traffic. You need to be creative and create content that the platforms favor.

Here are two types of content that get high engagement:

  • Photo carousels: People use photo carousels as clickbait, but thought leaders can also use them to promote their content. They’re easy to create using a tool like Canva, and they receive much more engagement. Social media users love visual content, so take advantage of that.
  • Short-form videos: Use short-form videos to showcase your brand voice and add humor to the mix. If done right, you’ll get lots of shares. Save your longer explainer videos for your website or YouTube channel.

The companies running the social media platforms have changed the rules of the game. If you want to have a presence on them, you must adjust your strategy and expectations.

Topic of the Month (TOTM) — Your Input Wanted

Our TOTM is: What have you found are the best uses for your old cell phones, even if they don’t have cell service?

Send your brief, pithy responses *that are different from those previously mentioned* to editor@SpeakerNetNews.com. Please put “Topic of the Month” or “TOTM” in the subject line.

Alex Neuman

When I’m a guest on a podcast/radio show/TV interview I want to record, I use my old phones. I create a cloud-recorded Zoom meeting and join from each old phone as a guest, with the audio muted to avoid the feedback “howl.” That way, I have an extra recording with multiple camera angles that I can later mine for quotes for short-format videos (reels, TikTok, shorts).

Bill Conerly

Connect to home Wifi system. Use it to play Spotify, Pandora or YouTube. I usually do not take my cell phone to my garage workshop, so I use an old cell phone for music there. I have it connected to good speakers.

Jeff Davidson

Use your old phone as a portable hard drive, e.g., you can store 1000s of MP3s in addition to photos and documents.

Janice Litvin

My old cell makes a good iPod. For those who like to load a lot of songs onto their devices, it frees up space.

Richard Schenkar

It is hard to find an inexpensive audio/video player — consider using your old cellphone.

Heather Rogers

I use my old iPhone 6S to perform the magic trick “Silk through phone,” where I run a long silk straight through it. If you’d like to learn this, you can reach out to me, and I’ll hop on Zoom with you and share it. :-)

How to Find and Manage Interns
at No Cost to You
(webcast)
with Rebecca Morgan, CSP, CMC, CVP, VMP

Rebecca MorganWould you like bright, young, tech-savvy minds to work on your business, without its costing you a dime? Do you have tasks that you’ve been wanting done, like social media posts from quotes from your books, articles, or webinar transcripts? Or clips from your webinars or speech videos to post on YouTube? You have a long list of things you’d love to have done, but you don’t have a VA, or if you do, s/he’s busy doing more important stuff.

Interns love working for people like us. Why? Because they can be creative, and their work will likely make it into the world. When interns work for big companies, they are relegated to really low-level, boring work where they don’t have much room to experiment.

There are some serious pitfalls to avoid. You want to go into this with your eyes wide open. Be informed before you dip your toe in the intern waters.

Since you are busy, and interns are only with you a short time, you need to know how to find good interns and get them up to speed quickly so they are productive.

Rebecca will share what she’s learned from engaging 170 interns since June 2020 without her paying a dime (some were paid, but by someone else — we’ll discuss).

Plan to come live (with your camera on), as this is designed as a webshop, so you’ll have short intervals to start your plan to recruit, engage, train, and utilize interns.

In this session, you will learn how to:

  • delineate relevant tasks for interns
  • stay out of legal trouble (not giving legal advice here)
  • identify sources for a steady stream of good interns
  • whittle down applicants to only the serious ones before you interview them
  • interview multiple applicants efficiently
  • onboard new interns so they get up to speed quickly
  • manage interns with the least amount of time from you
  • have your current interns prepare the next set
